Candy Girl

"Candy Girl" is the title of two different hit singles; one recorded in 1963 by Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, and another recorded in 1983 as the debut single from New Edition. Though two separate compositions, both songs tackle the same subject matter — a girlfriend whose "love is so sweet".

Each song approaches the material in different ways. The Four Seasons song is a doo-wop styled ode to a loving girlfriend ("I've been a searching all this wide world/Finally I found my/Candy Girl") The New Edition song, with Ralph Tresvant on lead vocals, finds the narrator both praising his girl ("Candy girl/you are my world/you look so sweet/you're a special treat"), and bragging about her qualities ("My girl's the best/and that's no lie/she tells me that/I'm her only guy"). The New Edition version, done in a style closely approximating that of Motown's The Jackson 5, also features rapped verses from Tresvant and Bobby Brown.

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons's "Candy Girl" reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, and #13 on the R&B chart. New Edition's "Candy Girl" was a #1 hit on the R&B chart, and peaked at #46 on the pop chart. In a television commercial for Applebee's, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons's "Candy Girl" is played in the background.
