Francisco de la Lastra
Colonel Francisco de la Lastra y de la Sotta (Santiago de Chile, 1777-1852) was the first Supreme Director of Chile (1814).
Biography
As a young man, de la Lastra was sent to Spain to study. He returned to Chile and later he married. He had some relations with the Carrera family because his brother, Manuel de la Lastra was married with Javiera Carrera, the sister of José Miguel Carrera (later, Manuel de la Lastra died so Javiera Carrera married again).
He was the first commander of the navy in Chile between 1812 and 1814 in Valparaíso.
De la Lastra assumed power after the first (second for some) dictatorship of José Miguel Carrera, while he was going to fight against the Spanish troops commanded by Antonio Pareja and later by Gabino Gainza. Then he governed with the title Supreme Director of Chile. He signed the treaty of Lircay with the Spanish and he changed back the flag that was put by Carrera to the Spanish flag. Carrera came back to Santiago and started his second (third for some authorities) dictatorship. After this dictatorship and during the Reconquista Francisco de la Lastra was exiled to Juan Fernández (a group of islands located west to América) even though he was considered too old.
