HMAS Cairns (naval base)
AustraliaThe second HMAS Cairns is a naval base of the Royal Australian Navy based, appropriately, at Cairns in Queensland. The facility was first used in 1971 when facilities for the maintenance of the RAN's patrol boats were established. In 1974, HMAS Cairns was commissioned as the parent establishment for patrol vessels and hydrographic ships based at Cairns. Today, Cairns is responsible for all Australian naval activity from Rockhampton to Thursday Island, and serves as the home base for half the navy's Fremantle class vessels as well as the RAN's entire hydrographic fleet. HMAS Cairns will be home port for 4 of the 14 new Armidale class patrol boats when they replace the Fremantle class patrol boats.
